Foreign Tourists Can Now Rental Socar in Jeju!

August 28, 2024 – Foreign tourists visiting Korea can now rent vehicles through Socar, thanks to a new service launched by the mobility innovation platform, Socar Inc. (CEO Park Jae-wook).

This marks the first time Socar has opened its car rental services specifically for international tourists.

Socar has begun offering its services through major global Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) such as Klook, Kkday, and QeeQ. Jeju Island, with its high demand from foreign tourists and the presence of large Socar Stations, was selected as the initial service area. The service has been launched as a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

Foreign tourists holding an international driving license can book a Socar vehicle through the global OTAs where Socar products are listed. Upon arrival in Jeju, they can take a shuttle to the Socar Station Jeju, where they will receive their vehicle through an electronic contract process. Unlike domestic users who can control the vehicle through the Socar app’s smart key, foreign users will be provided with a physical key.

Based on the results of the Jeju service operation, Socar plans to enhance the service and expand it to mainland Korea by 2025, including locations such as Seoul and Incheon Airport. Additionally, Socar intends to develop a global version of its app to provide its signature contactless service to foreign inbound customers.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization, the number of foreign tourists visiting Korea in the first half of this year reached 7.7 million, a 73.8% increase from the previous year, and about 91% of the level seen in the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

An Dong-hwa, Head of Socar’s Car-sharing Group, stated, “We will quickly establish our presence in the inbound foreign tourist market by leveraging Socar’s car-sharing operation expertise and technology. We aim to contribute to the development of Korea’s tourism industry by providing more convenient and efficient mobility services to foreign tourists visiting Korea.”
